“I dreamed of an outstanding flute teacher- skillful, gentle, dynamic, encouraging, and kind, a mile from my Takoma Park home. Low and behold, she exists! In Carrie Rose’s comfortable home studio, my 11-year-old daughter is growing as a musician and as a person. I recommend her highly.”

"I don't think I've realized until recently how lucky I was to have a flute teacher (or any teacher at all) from a young age who inspired so much discovery and creating and being outside of the ordinary and how much that's shaped who I am as a person and musician today."

--Alexandra Hamburger, former student

"I've never seen her respond so excitedly to a new learning experience and teacher. I was pretty stunned. She ran out of the room with a great big smile and said, 'She is so fun!'"

--Daphne Pee, parent

"We really appreciate everything you've done for both of our kids, Carrie.  It's not just flute lessons -- it's life lessons!  We're so lucky to have you!"

Philosophy of Teaching

"Everyone has different learning styles, challenges, and reasons for playing the flute.  I strive to find each person's unique path to relating to music.  Some people are eager to dive in and learn challenging repertoire and steadily improve their technique.  Some people need to develop tools to move courageously through challenges.  Some people need to move their bodies in order to understand rhythm.  Some people need to sing in order to understand phrasing.  Some people need a calm lesson  about breathing in order to move past a hard day.   Some people need to make up stories in order to engage with the form and expression in a piece.  I meet students where they are.

Part of this approach comes from my 10 years of experience teaching music to grades 1-8 at a Montessori School.  One of Montessori's maxims is to "Follow the Child" (or student of any age!).

I teach students of all ages and abilities.  I enjoy helping the most advanced student soar ahead with tools that I have developed over decades of devotion to music.  I have had students drive across the city to take lessons to prepare for college auditions.  I enjoy helping a nine year old get that exciting first sound.  I enjoy helping students who have learning challenges in multiple areas of their lives learn about themselves through music.  I enjoy teaching adults; a lot of what I understand about teaching comes from adults being able to articulate what they need.

I am also a composer, and will happily accompany a student on that journey!

Students are encouraged to perform and play with others.  There are studio recitals for my students twice per year.  Many students also participate in the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra, DC Youth Orchestra ProgramFlute-a-rama summer camp that I run with Melissa Lindon, University of Maryland Summer Camp, the Flute Society of Washington's Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, and local Honors, All-County, and All-State bands.

I hope that we get to work together!"

--Carrie Rose

"Thanks for your great approach to dealing with every kids’ needs.  You are truly a great teacher.  Just what [she] needed to help her heal. "
