A b o u t

Carrie Rose is a flutist, composer, and teacher in the Washington, DC area.​

Flutist

 

Rose wails out avant-garde music, unfurls a luscious array of classical chamber music, grooves for folk dances, freelances with regional orchestras, and presents in-person and recorded concerts called Breathing In Nature.

 

In Rose's Breathing In Nature concerts, solo flute interlaces with videos and sounds from nature.  These outdoor and indoor performances include compositions by Rose and other contemporary and classical composers.  Posted on YouTube are full-length flute & video concerts in nature:  She plays in streams, meadows, flower gardens and up in a tree, in the afternoon, at dawn, and in the moonlight. 

 

Rose is a member of inHale - a flute collective with Lisa Cella and Jane Rigler - three flute players on a mission to bring classical music of our time into the world.

 

Rose plays for English Country Dances, Contra Dances, Scottish Country Dances, and Waltzes throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.  She frequently plays for dances presented by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington.

 

Rose plays classical chamber music for local series like Church of the Epiphany Tuesday Concert Series and Groupmuse house concerts with Au Contraire (flute and harp ensemble with Michelle Myers Lundy) and as a duo with pianist Szu-Yi Li.

 

She is an orchestral freelancer in the DC area with ensembles like the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, Arlington Philharmonic, Cathedral Choral Society, and Washington Concert Opera.  Past venues have included the National Cathedral, Lisner Auditorium, and the Harman Center for the Arts.

Her new music CD, Books of Flutes, released by 11 West Records, features solo and ensemble music and was broadcast it in its entirety by WMUA in Amherst, Massachusetts.

 

Rose earned Master and Bachelor of Music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Joshua Smith, principal flutist of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Composer

 

Her compositions have been featured at the University of DC, Dupont Underground, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Goucher College, and Strathmore Mansion, and have been played by the DC Youth Orchestra.

Rose composes for the Origins Concert Series, which features a world premiere of her compositions on each concert

 

In DC’s City Paper, she was named a “favorite local composer”.  

 

Her performing and composing work has received numerous grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, the Arts and Humanities Commission of Montgomery County, and the American Composers Forum.

Rose happily accepts commissions for new compositions.  

Origins Concert Series

She is producer, composer, and performer for the Origins Concert Series in Silver Spring, Maryland—a hub for adventurous music seekers that features a world premiere of her compositions on each concert.  The series is supported by the Arts and Humanities Commission of Montgomery County.

Teacher

 

Rose is an enthusiastic teacher at her Private Flute Studio in Takoma Park / Silver Spring, Maryland,  A flute teacher with over 25 years of experience, Rose is passionate about passing on the fruits of her life's immersion in music, and enjoys finding the unique way that each student learns. 

 

Rose taught general music classes for ten years at the Oneness-Family Montessori School, an international peace academy in Bethesda, Maryland.  She runs Flute-a-rama Summer Camps with Melissa Lindon, and has coached chamber music through the DC Youth Orchestra Program.
